Spina Bifida Awareness Month
The Spina Bifida Association, which designates October as Spina Bifida Awareness
Month, warns that all women of childbearing age are at risk for having a baby
with spina bifida, the most common permanently disabling birth defect.
While the exact cause of spina bifida is not known, it seems to be a combination
of genetic and environmental factors and occurs more frequently in Hispanic
women. The disease causes an incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord,
resulting in paralysis, bowel and bladder complications, water on the brain and
learning difficulties.
Research shows that taking 400mcg of the B vitamin folic acid every day before
and during early pregnancy can reduce a woman’s risk of having a baby with the disease by 70 percent. For more information,
call the Spina Bifida Association of Houston Gulf Coast at 281-447-2707 or
